Grace’s Story
It all started when…
While getting my bachelor's degree in Biblical studies, I distinctly remember the semester I noticed a preaching class being offered. I thought to myself, "I will not be taking that class." Considering my gender, inadequacies, and serious fear of public speaking, I convinced myself God was not calling me to preach - I didn't have that gift. Still, my insecurities could not drown out another voice whispering, "Maybe. Why not?"
I heard that soft voice speak again when I saw a preaching class on the course schedule during seminary. I tried to remind the voice of the list of reasons why I wasn't a preacher, but it would not listen. Instead, it blurted out to another student, "I want to try preaching some time." What was I saying?! I had NO IDEA how to write a sermon. Before I could swallow my words, the student responded, "we need a pulpit fill in two months; I will let my pastor know." I got behind the pulpit without any official training or direction and preached my first sermon two months later.
After that, I accepted every opportunity I received to preach, committed to improving, and curious about what God might be up to. I regularly drove an hour outside my city to preach and lead the gathering at a church with about 12 folks (on a good Sunday) all over 60. Early on, I learned to say "AMEN!" really loud after my final prayer because the worship leader in her 70s would often fall asleep.
At the time, I didn't realize how fortunate I was to have a safe space to practice, make mistakes, and try different preaching styles. I realize my story is unique - women often don't have opportunities to practice and explore their passion for preaching in safe spaces. This must change! The best way to uncover your passion for preaching and hone your skills is by practicing and receiving feedback over and over again.
Below is a example of Grace’s amazing preaching:
